Definition: A program that focuses on the systematic study of extinct societies, and the past of living societies, via the excavation, analysis and interpretation of their artifactual, human, and associated remains. The Master's Degree Course in Archeology aims to provide a solid base of knowledge in the field of archeology of the European continent and of the countries bordering the Mediterranean and to train skills that guarantee the possibility of carrying out professional activities in the sector of the protection and valorisation of archaeological assets and in participation in archaeological excavations. The course is aimed at students who satisfy the required prerequisites, having already acquired an adequate historical-archaeological preparation in the Bachelor degree. Possession of the prerequisites will be assessed through an admission interview, aimed exclusively at verifying the acquisition in the candidate's previous university career of all the credits envisaged by the Regulation as requirements for admission to the Master's Degree in Archaeology. Please note: this is therefore not an exam. It is just a check of the list of exams taken in the three-year period. The characterizing courses include the main archaeological disciplines (European prehistory and protohistory, Etruscology, archeology of pre-Roman Italy, Greek archaeology, Roman archaeology, archeology of Magna Graecia, archeology of the Roman provinces, etc.), a course in Greek, Latin or medieval literature , one course in ancient history or Egyptology and two courses in anthropology or analytical methods for the study of cultural heritage. The training activities are organized on a six-monthly basis and include, in addition to the institutional courses, workshops to be carried out on archaeological excavation sites or in the classroom in technical-archaeological disciplines (archaeological drawing, tools for surveying structures and cataloging of artefacts). Ample space is reserved for research work in view of the preparation of the degree thesis.

The preparation acquired in the degree course provides the indispensable cognitive tools, both in terms of historical-archaeological knowledge and in terms of technical and methodological skills, for the continuous updating of knowledge of the specific sector and therefore to be able to independently continue the their training in order to access further levels of scientific research (specialization school in archeology or PhD).

At the end of their studies, graduates must have the ability to operate both on an archaeological excavation site with excavation activities, data processing, phasing of the emerged structures, reconstruction of the history of the investigated area, and in research institutions , protection and enhancement of archaeological assets, with mostly operational roles.

The graduate will have coordination functions within an interdisciplinary research network, which increasingly characterize modern archaeological research and will be able to carry out management functions in all those institutions, whether public or private, dedicated to research, protection, conservation and valorisation of the archaeological heritage, such as, for example, Superintendencies, Museums, research centers in various capacities interested in the archaeological heritage, as well as to access further levels of scientific research in the university context (PhD, specialization school in Archaeology, master's degree and more) to complete their training for the purpose of assuming higher responsibilities in the university field or in specific institutions such as Superintendencies and archaeological museums. skills associated with the function: The graduate will have an in-depth knowledge of all the main research fields of archaeological disciplines relating to the Mediterranean and European world, from prehistory to protohistory, from Etruscology to classical archeology and the history of ancient art.

A broad and in-depth knowledge of research methodologies regarding archaeological excavation techniques and the methods of classification and analysis of the different archaeological sources and the different categories of materials, with particular reference to the use of IT systems and data processing. It will also be able to interact with the scientific community and communicate to a wider public the meaning of archaeological research as a scientific tool for the reconstruction of the past and as a cultural experience that moves on few certainties and many questions. - 6 credits to be allocated to other freely chosen courses among those offered by GEA University, or to two-year courses, to be agreed with the teacher of courses already taken in the three-year degree course

- 2 credits to be allocated to an internship or to an educational laboratory activated within the Master's Degree Course, aimed at developing specific professional skills in the archaeological field or as an assessment of the Italian or another language.

Additional language skills: Italian (2 credits)

g - The student is advised to follow the archaeological disciplines courses and take the relevant exams starting from the first year. It is also advisable to choose the further exams and their sequence in relation to the topic of the degree thesis, to be agreed with the supervisor within the first year of the course.

Once the necessary 60 credits have been acquired, in compliance with these regulations, the student is admitted to take the final test to obtain the Master's degree.

A Bachelor degree with a basic preparation in archaeological disciplines or graduates who have acquired their degree abroad following a curriculum of university studies that guarantees sufficient basic preparation in archaeological disciplines and a knowledge of the English language equal to or superior to that required for level B1.

An entry requirement is a knowledge of the English language equal to or higher than B1 level.

Candidates who are notified of any deficiencies during the first interview will be directed to take individual exams necessary to achieve the entry requirements. The individual exams must be passed before the last admission interview.

Master of Biblical Archeology 

For the master's degree in Biblical Archaeology, are required only the possession of a Bachelor degree or equivalent and passing a short preparatory course.


Verification method

Candidates who possess the curricular requirements and who have achieved a Bachelor degree score of 98/100 or higher will be automatically admitted; admitted candidates will receive confirmation of their admission via electronic procedure. Candidates in possession of the curricular requirements indicated above who have achieved a score lower than 98/100 will instead have to attend an online interview in streaming. Any communication will be sent by the evaluation commission to individual candidates via email.

In order to be admitted to the academic year candidates must meet all admission requirements (Bachelor degree or equivalent or 120 credits, any single exams, knowledge of the English language).


Supplementary course

Students with a Bachelor degree in a different discipline, can take an additional course at GEA university. Successful completion of the supplementary course gives the right to automatic enrollment in the Archeology master's degree.
