"Daoism and Technology: Digital Simplicity" is a unique interdisciplinary course that blends Taoist philosophy with critical perspectives on modern technology use. This course aims to cultivate mindful engagement with digital tools through the lens of Daoist principles.

Course Description:

This course explores the intersection of Daoist philosophy and modern technology, examining how the ancient principles of wu wei (non-action), ziran (naturalness), and simplicity can guide our digital lives. Through readings, reflective practice, and digital minimalism experiments, students will develop a more harmonious relationship with technology.


Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand and articulate key Daoist concepts relevant to technological life.
  • Analyze the impact of digital technology on attention, well-being, and social interaction.
  • Apply Daoist principles to design and adopt simpler, more intentional digital habits.

Module 1: Introduction to Daoism

  • Topics: Overview of Daoist texts (Dao De Jing, Zhuangzi), key concepts: Dao, De, Wu Wei, Ziran, Simplicity
  • Readings: Selections from the Dao De Jing and Zhuangzi
  • Activity: Personal reflection journal: "What is my current relationship with technology?"

Module 2: Technology and the Modern Mind

  • Topics: Attention economy, dopamine loops, surveillance capitalism
  • Readings: Excerpts from Cal Newport’s Digital Minimalism, Tristan Harris on humane technology
  • Discussion: Is modern tech aligned or misaligned with natural flow?

Module 3: Wu Wei in the Digital Age

  • Topics: Non-action vs. passivity, flow states, effortlessness in online behavior
  • Case Study: Social media design vs. effortless living
  • Practice: One-day digital fast and reflection

Module 4: Ziran and Natural Use of Technology

  • Topics: Organic vs. artificial rhythms, nature-inspired design
  • Workshop: Create a “natural technology day plan” aligned with personal rhythms

Module 5: Simplicity and Minimalism
